Big Black Dog: Thrifty Thursday and my First Treat!!!

May 6, 2009

Thrifty Thursday and my First Treat!!!

Today was a very hectic day. We were expecting thunderstorms and I had to get my perennials planted. But of course I had to make a trip to the nursery to buy a few more pots. The storm chased me home but I did get the plants in, all 22 pots, and a few of my HUGE annual planters done too. And then it opened up and poured rain and it's still raining out as I'm typing. But my plants are so happy and basically standing at attention with all the refreshing rain!

Last week I had a great week as far as garage sales go. I rarely have the time to stop but for some reason I stopped. When I walked up the driveway of the sale, I saw IT! I could not believe my eyes, there was the small, black matte, ceramic vase that I've been looking for for over 25 years. WOW! My Great Grama had a vase exactly like this. My Mom has it now and I've always loved it. Actually, I did have it for a while but when I moved to FL I gave it back to my Mom for safe keeping. The vase is not expensive but I treasured it. Plus I love the deco style and it always looked great in my home.

The price tag on the black vase was $.25 but I would have paid easily $50 for it. I was so excited and I could not wait to tell my Mom. She is now looking for the original vase and I hope she finds it because I'd love a pair!

If you have time, I did write a post about my Great Grand Parents and my remembrances of Fried Dandelions Blossoms and Dandelion Wine.

I felt so good about finding the little vase that I stopped at another garage sale that was a few blocks away. Three weeks ago I re-arranged my cupboards and discovered how pitiful my collection of dessert dishes is. I found these gorgeous dessert plates 4 @ $.25. I love them!

Also last week I picked up another rag doll at TJMaxx marked down to $3. I keep her in my kitchen to keep me company while I bake. She sits very nicely on the hood shelf above my stove.

I also picked up these little jointed wooden dolls. Aren't they cute! The pair was $.25 and I could not resist them. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them yet. For now they are both in my bookcase along side my cookbooks. The do need some clothes though!

Last night's dinner was Rouelles de Veau Bourgeoise or Veal Shanks with Pearl Onions and Mushrooms. Since I'm just learning about wines, Mike at our local Wine Store is my wine coach and he suggested a bottle of Cotes du Rhone Domaine Andezon. And I'm just pouring the last glass. Although the wine was wonderful at dinner, the last glass is fabulous!

Lori of Family Trees May Contain Some Nuts is the host for Treat Yourself Thursday and how I'm going to look forward to Thursdays now that I know a treat is waiting.

The vase is terrific Michelle. Is it metal? That is so great when you just happen upon something that you thought you would never see again. You snagged some great bargains, but after planting 22+ pots, you certainly deserve a nice treat and a lovely glass of wine.

Cheers!
Sue.

What great finds, but I absolutely LoVe that black vase. I'm so excited for you that you found it and can now have a pair! Here's hoping that Mom can find it! The yellow flowers look stunning against the black.

Blessings to you from Kansas,
Valerie

I think it's wonderful that you found the vase. I also think it's grand that you have been keeping your eyes open for it for so long. It was no coincidence that you stopped at that sale!

ca-Those little wooden dolls were my favorite childhood toys. There was a specialty toy store in Minneapolis where we would go for them. I have a collection of more than 20.
