Big Black Dog: TWD -- Banana Cream Pie

TWD -- Banana Cream Pie

I was very happy to make this week's recipe for Tuesdays with Dorie because (1) I love to make pie, any kind of pie and (2) I love to make pie, any kind of pie! This weeks host for TWD is Amy of Sing for Your Supper and thank you so much for picking such a gorgeous recipe for us to make.

I was rearranging my cabinets over the weekend and found these 4" pie pans and decided to make mini pies instead of regular pie. I enjoy miniaturizing baked goods and thought Dorie's Banana Cream Pie would work out well and it did. I had so much fun playing around with the pie crust and actually made 3 different designs.

I followed the recipe for the filling but for the pie crust I did make some changes. I used vodka in place of the water and I used lard in place of the shortening and my crust turned out fabulously light and crispy and tasted just delicious. I've used vodka in my pie crust for some time now but this is the first time I've tried lard and it won't be my last!

For the topping I did saute banana slices in butter...oh yummy! I love caramelized bananas and they're so pretty. I considered using a sliced strawberry on top but I decided to keep the flavors to banana, cream and butter!! And after tasting my pie, it does not need another flavor, not at all. Good job Dorie, this recipe was fab!

Michelle, how did I not know you were part of TWD? Your little pies are so pretty! I made minis too but are not nearly as cute as yours. I love the caramalized banana slices on top, great touch!

Sauteed bananas in butter reminds me of bananas flambe. Remember that dessert? But I have a feeling yours was much better!

Wish I had thought of that. I bet caramelizing those bananas brought out some incredible flavor. Will have to try. And vodka in the crust. You are tooooo much. They look great.

What adorable pies! Beautiful! I am a big fan of the vodka in crust concept and lard. I buy leaf lard at a farmer's market and render it out then portion it for pie crust and freeze it. Rendering the lard is also seasons my cast iron Dutch oven at the same time, what a bonus.

They look great Michelle! So cute.
I think the butter is the reason my crust did shrink, I had holes where the little bits of butter melted out.
I love the little banana toppings on yours.
