Big Black Dog: Banana Boats **Satisfying a Taste

Banana Boats **Satisfying a Taste

Remember Girl Scouts?

I remember so much about Girl Scouts and cooking on an open fire which was so much fun. Whenever we had a Girl Scout camping trip, we would form small groups and select our own menus which had to be approved. And every time my group voted unanimously for Banana Boats for dessert and every time it would be x'd out and replaced with S'Mores. S'Mores are fine the first few times, but come on all ready, even S'Mores can get b-o-r-i-n-g!

Last week I had a taste for something sweet particularly something chocolate but I had no desire to make a dessert. I had a bag of Peanut M&Ms which was just not satisfying my needs! But then I remembered the Banana Boats and I knew I could whip up these babies in no time flat and I could be a wee bit creative too.

You can bake the Banana Boats in an open fire, on a charcoal grill or in an oven. The banana will darken on the tips but this does not effect the wonderful taste of warm banana and melted chocolate what so ever!

Ooey Gooey Banana Boats
Recipe as I remember from Girl Scouts

Whole Banana(s)
Semi-sweet chocolate chips
Miniature marshmallows
M&Ms
Heath Toffee Chips
Whipped Cream
Crushed Peanuts

1. Slice banana down the middle careful to not slice all the way through.
2. Carefully cut away a wedge section of the peel and discard.
3. Pinch the banana inward to open up the banana a little bit. Fill with chocolate, candy, marshmallows or whatever you want but make sure it will melt.
4. Wrap each banana in aluminum foil and bake at 350 degrees until chocolate is completely melted.
5. Remove from oven, plate banana and top with whipped cream and crushed peanuts. Enjoy!

Okay, this is my first attempt, Banana, Milk Chocolate Chunks, Peanut M&Ms.

And this is my second attempt, Banana, Semi-sweet Chocolate Chips, Peanut Butter Chips or Heath Bar Chips. Topped with Whipped Cream, Crushed Peanuts and a Red Hot.

For some strange reason, I've been humming "Kum Bay Ya" for the last week!

LOL! They all look very creative! My husband will take peeled bananas, peaches, kiwi and such and throw them on the grill for desserts - I love them all warm with a scoop of ice cream! Yum!

I love this posting since I had such a fun "career" in Brownies and Girl Scouts. My dad always joked that it was years before he learned that the recipe for S'mores really did not call for ashes.
I loved the recipe that used ground meat, tomatoes, potato slices.. onion for those girls who had more "mature" taste buds, carrots and celery. Pour into a coffee can.. the short ones that required using a "key" to open them. Place the lid back on top and nestle the can in the hots coals of a fire. Usually in about an hour you had a delicious stew. Yummy for those chilly evening cookouts. Thanks for bringing back some fun memories.
And by the way.. those banana boats look almost gluten-free which is something my six year old (today!) granddaughter would love. If you have time, visit me at Ladybug Creek to see Carmen.
Hugs,
Karen

I'm a "retired" Girl Scout with more than 20 years under my sash when adding my years as a scout and being the troop leader for my daughters' troops!! We ALWAYS cooked banana boats. We ALWAYS cooked EVERYTHING wrapped in foil. The next best thing to a microwave. Open fire cooking is the GREATEST!!

I don't remember having these in girl scouts. We always had s'mores or those little pizzas in the pie irons. The banana boats look just as fun though. I think I'd love some peanut butter on mine.

I loved loved loved being a girl scout. I was one of those girls who shot down the banana boats, and I wasn't a fan of mystery soup either.

My Girl Scout troops have been making these since our very first camping trip. One year we even had them for breakfast! They are a tradition now, and most of the girls would choose these over smores. Although waving around a flaming marshmallow on a stick has its own charms. Oh, in case you never tried it, a schmear of nutella can make a smore a wonderful thing.

This was one of my favorite treats in Girl Scouts to.. This and pot iron pizzas, yum!

We made these last summer around my friends fire pit for postarity. My friend who can normally not indulge in sweets due to sugar was able to enjoy right along with the rest of us with sugar free chocolate. We would do chocolate chips, peanutbutter chips (or jsut a dab of peanut butter, and marshmellows as kids.

Ironically... I was jsut talking to someone last week about these!

I just made Banana Boats with my Brownie Scouts this past summer. The day they were sceduled to come over to my house it was raining, but we made them anyways and just heated them in the oven. Worked fine & the girls loooooved them! Even the girl who "doesn't like" bananas and the one who "doesn't like" marshmallows and the junk food junkie in my troop who actually ate her banana--lol!

"Humming Kumbiya" for a week - ;-p - chuckle, chuckle, chuckle!! great ending!!!

While I was never in girl scouts, I did attend two camps every year, and took out door cooking so many times the leaders finally said I couldn't any more :-{ We learned how to make all types of different fires - TeePee, Log Cabin, etc.; Learned how to tie all kinds of knots; and cooked. I enjoyed how we used intitutional sizedcans the kitchen had saved for us, made our fire, cut a flap in one side of the can, rolled it open and then put the upside down cans over the fire, and cooked pancakes on top. Yummy!!!
As well as the pizza's using tubed biscuits, pizza sauce and cheese.

We also made the "Hobos Diner" one of the other commenters referred to, with sliced potatoes, carrots, onion, and a little bit of ground meat; wrapped up in foil and cooked in hot ashes.

Good memories!! :-D

When "our boys" were young, there was a large group of us who use to go camping together. Some of them like to use Ressece's peanut butter cups instead of the Hershey bar's in their some 'ores.

They had also introduced us to broomstick pies. While they are similar to the pies you can make inside the cast iron handled thingies (more great technical terminology there), cooking them on a broomstick added it's own fun to it. Take old brrom handles which have been sanded down a little and of course scrubbed, wrap a good sized biscuit around the end of the handle, then roast it over the open fire turning it occasionally so that all areas get thourally roasted. It's done when you can gently twist/pull it off. Yup, it's hot, so be careful. But then you fill the roasted biscuit cup with canned pie filling, or puddings, etc.. You can also then fill them with a variety of choc., butterscotch, etc. chips and chopped nuts, put a piece of foil over the top, and wait about five minutes to eat.

Thanks for bring the memories to mind Michelle ;-}

Hi Michelle..

That looks really yummy, surely my sons would love to try..

Grilled banana is a favourite dessert/refreshment in Indonesia too.

One of the common ways is by cutting a peeled banana the long way into half, place them on a grill, toaster or open fire.. then pour some condensed milk and sprinkle some tasty/cheddar cheese.. hundreds-and-thousands and crushed peanuts can also be added.. :-)
