Pink Saturday **How my dogs met Pepe Le Pew

Happy Pink Saturday!

I had some big plans for this week's Pink Saturday but some things came up at the last minute and I was unable to even begin my photo journey. At about 10:30 pm Thursday night two of my dogs, aka Big Stinker and Little Stinker, decided to shake hands with a huge male skunk. We have 6 acres of land and I swear that 3/4's of it smells like skunk. I think the dogs chased the poor thing all over our property!

Thank goodness it was a relatively warm night and I could bathe both dogs outside with the hose. PU! I actually hosed them down and washed them twice but this morning the skunk odor was still evident so I bathed them for a third time, and then a fourth time. Then I had to start cleaning up the house. I won't go into detail on my cleaning procedure but my hands are still pruney!

I am dedicating my Pink Saturday to Pepe Le Peu in hopes that if he gets enough attention now maybe he will not feel the need to visit again any time soon!

From Wikipedia: Pepé Le Pew is an Academy Award-winning fictional character in the Warner Bros. Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series of cartoons, first introduced in 1945. A French anthropomorphic skunk that always strolls around in Paris in the springtime, when everyone's thoughts are of "love", Pepé is constantly seeking "l'amour" of his own. Chuck Jones, Pepé's creator, wrote that Pepé was based (loosely) on the personality of his Termite Terrace colleague, writer Tedd Pierce, a self-styled "ladies' man" who reportedly always assumed that his infatuations were requited. Pepé's voice, provided by Mel Blanc, was based on Charles Boyer's Pépé le Moko from Algiers (1938), a remake of the 1937 French film Pépé le Moko.

Penelope Pussycat is best known as the often bewildered love interest of Looney Tunes star-skunk, Pepe Le Pew. Penelope is a typical black and white pussycat, though by some means or another, she often finds herself with a white stripe down her back. She talks very seldom, and has a somewhat shy personality...until she falls in love. When Penelope falls in love, and there is nothing to get in her way, she can be just as aggressively passionate and unstoppable as Pepe. Penelope is always on the lookout for romance, but often that romance comes paired with a disturbingly foul odor.

Today is Pink Saturday's One Year Anniversary so Happy Birthday Pink! Please visit Miss Beverly of How Sweet the Sound and see what the other Pinksters are up to!

Ugh! We've experienced this lovely situation as well!

I googled a formula to bathe the pup in. I can't remember exactly what it was, but it involved vinegar.

Good luck!

I heard a story of NPR about getting out skunk odor, but can't remember now what they said DID work, only that tomato juice and regular scrubbing DON'T work. It might have been on "Science Friday" because they had a chemist on there who HAD created an "anecdote" of sorts to the odor which does neutralize it. Perhaps you could go to the NPR website and search for "skunk odor remover."

Bless your heart - - - - NO FUN.

Is this where the Bible verse, "This too shall pass" comes in???

Lovely post. Sorry to hear about the skunk. I cannot imagine how horrible it is to have your puppies and property stinking like one. I only smell it on highways when I drive by.
Happy PS Birthday to you!!

The NPR mix does work...used it on my Scottie Dog a few years ago. We were visiting my sister in NH - I don't think he had ever seen a skunk before so he got up close and stinky.

Funny stuff. I guess the tomato juice bath doesn't work or you'd have tried it?

Pepe Le Pew was my mother's favorite Looney Tunes character. She adored him. She also adored Charles Boyer so that coincides.

I enjoyed the cartoon. Brings back Sat morning cartoon memories. Thanks!

Yikes! I've only seen skunk in tv and the way people reacts to their smell makes me thankful I haven't seen any. I don't think we have one here. I am curious how bad but I don't think I want to actually smell it. Weird, huh?

Happy PS

Oh, I know exactly what you're going through. Our Boomer got skunked a few years ago. You can't even describe how bad that smell is. Tom Hanks was on Letterman last week talking about his dogs being skunked and it was hilarious.

I live in the country so am familiar with the skunk aroma. Fortunately my big brown dog hasn't gotten that personal with one yet. Good luck de-skunking!

Oh no, what a disaster. A time consuming mess. What little stinkers. That is dedication to bathe them so many times, you must really LOVE them, LOL! Animals can sometimes throw such a wrench into your life, but what would we do without the wonderful little critters! Happy Pink Saturday and have a loveleigh weekend!

Yikes!!! We've had skunk smell here, but fortunately not actually ON the animals. I'm sorry you had to deal with all that. I've heard that bathing them in tomato juice is supposed to get rid of the stench.

Happy Pink Saturday!

So good you kept your sense of humour through it. Pepe reminds me of my husband.. always trying to hug me while I am reading.. cooking.. doing the dishes..

Boy does that bring back memories. My dogs used to have skunk encounters fairly often when we lived in California! We also had one living under our house and when he let loose, everything stunk for days! Happy Pink Saturday!

Ha, what an adventure your pups had! Four baths is quite the work out. Hopefully the smell is starting to fade by now. How appropriate that you would dedicate your Pink Saturday post to Pepe :) Happy Bday, Pink Saturday!

You have a couple of big stinkers alright!!! Your post was fun to read as I imagined a very scared skunk being chased by your 2 big dogs, who probably just wanted to play. Sorry to hear about all the effort in cleaning up the mess. I love Pepe Le Pew, thanks for sharing and Happy PS!!!

Oh no! I'm sure that's one smelly situation you could have lived without.

A teen in my childhood neighborhood, had a skunk for a pet. She used to take it for walks on a leash. It was very docile, and well behaved. Of course, it's odor glands had been removed.

Your two little black stinkers are very handsome.

Best Wishes,
Kay

I cannot quit laughing! Big stinker and little stinker!

My mother-in-law dog sat my two dogs once, and they caught a skunk in her backyard, and brought it into her bedroom. I guess they thought she might like a little prize. Her house smelled, less than fresh, for quite some time! :-)

Oh the joys of doggy parenthood! Hugs!
