Big Black Dog: A new love......Calfoutis!

A new love......Calfoutis!

I've wanted to try making Calfoutis for some time now but with my surgery, house construction and just plain every day life, time is not on my side. But I did knuckle down this week and got it done. I knew I would love it as pudding or anything made like a pudding is right up my alley!! I made the Calfoutis late last night and there's only 1 small piece left. Gee, I guess I will have to make it again!!

I searched and found a wonderful recipe on Fanny's Foodbeam blog. It is her grandmother's recipe and sounded so good, I just had to try it. And I sure was not disappointed as Fanny's Calfoutis is excellent. And it is dessert I will make again and again.

And the only thing I would change is to add another cup of fresh fruit. I used 1 c. fresh blueberries and 1 c. pitted fresh black cherries. I think I would add an additional cup of cherries as the cherries are the best!!!! I did not have a tart pan large enough so I used my 11" springform pan and it worked perfectly.

Calfoutis is really a perfect dessert for us...a pudding like consistency, fresh fruit and not too sweet. It really was delicious and I know I will make it again and again.

Maryann...long time, no see!!! How are you!

Linda (Ohiomom), I'm pretty sure you will love this but for the Food Critic you might want to sprinkle his slice with powdered sugar.

Lucy, I'm not sure you will like this one or not. You might have to top with whipped cream....LOL!!!

Linda, I did not think I was going to be on time for your event. I've been so busy...just happy that I remembered Calfoutis and could make it in time!!

I've been looking at variations of this recipe for a while now and just kept procrastinating only because cherries are so hugeley expensive here. I see you used some fresh blueberries (I'm encouraged) and now maybe I can use the cherries in a jar. I'll give it a try - what's the worst that could happen (if it's a total disaster I'll send you a picture)

Giz, after making this I can tell you can use just about any fruit you have on hand, fresh and/or canned...but I would drain any liquid from canned fruit. And it would be very hard to mess up, it's just such a no frills recipe. The only problem I see is if you used a pan that was too small.

You can make this round, rectangular or any shape. I considered my bundt pan which would work well but you'd have to watch the baking time carefully.

Absolutely lovely! I just made a Clafouti too. Though the recipe is slightly different it turned out great and everyone gobbled it up. These are definitely worth a try!

I am a fan of Fanny's Foodbeam blog too. This looks delightful. On a side note - can I come live in your kitchen?

Now I find it ... I knew I saw this wonderful dessert and just had to make it. Wish I had remembered that you made it. I found a recipe that just did not work. I am going to start leaving notes for myself when I see these great desserts.

Mine is in the landfill ....
