Big Black Dog: Angelo's Coney Island and a Giveaway!

February 18, 2010

Angelo's Coney Island and a Giveaway!

A few weeks ago I attempted to make Angelo's Coney Island Hot Dogs and although the recipe was good, it was not even close to the original recipe. And being I lived in Flint, Michigan for many years I know Angelo's almost too well.

Marty

A few days after I posted my failed attempt at duplicating Angelo's Famous Coney Dogs, I received a very nice note telling me that the Coney Island recipe I had used was not correct and the person that sent the email is none other then former DePaul Basketball Star Marty Embry!

But what does Marty Embry have in common with Angelo's Coney Island Hot Dogs?

IMG_0690-1-600

Marty Embry, chef, father, artist, business owner, Coney Dog Aficionado and author of the popular cookbook series "From the Court to the Kitchen" has developed his own secret Spice Mix for an authentic Coney Island Sauce.

Marty graciously sent me two jars of his Coney Sauce Spice Mix. Wasn't that sweet!

Well, I made the Coney Sauce and we loved it! The Coney Sauce is easy enough to make, just brown ground beef or turkey add onions and Marty's Secret Mix and then simmer for 30 minutes. Simple! Of course Mr. Tastebuds had to experiment a bit and sprinkled some the Coney Spice Mix on his baked chicken!

Since I know you want to try an authentic Coney Island Hot Dog and I just happen to have an extra jar of Coney Sauce Spice Mix, I am offering one Jar to one lucky person!

***Update***

Marty just dontated ONE more jar of his Coney Sauce Spice Mix so there will be 2 winners! Thank you Marty!

Look at these gorgeous Coney Dogs! Don't you want to just take a big bite!

You know the drill, if you'd like to try Marty's secret Coney Spice Mix, leave a comment on this post. The winners will be announced, Thursday, February 25th.

If you are interested in ordering the Coney Sauce Spice please visit From the Court to the Kitchen Spices and Apparel. And if you're interested in any of Marty's cookbooks, poetry or artwork you can find a listing at Marty Embry's Storefront.

Thanks for the giveaway Michelle!

Oh, have you ever deep fried a really good hot dog? It brings the dog to a whole new level!!

Also, how many carbs does your husband eat in a day - my doctor just told me I am eating too much, even though my blood sugar is good - I only get between 110 and 150 now - it may help me lose weight too.

I have to say that I live near Coney Island and the hot dogs are generally served with mustard and sauerkraut, sometimes with an onion mixture, but NEVER as you have them pictured here. Spice mixture. Pshaw! Not in Coney Island!! :-)

Hey Michelle,
this is a little note to Altobarb; I am very familiar with the Coneys of Coney Island (saurkraut), Southern Coneys (cole slaw) and so forth. I can promise you that the coneys that you speak of have a recipe of spices to make the sauce. Our recipes are similar and actually prepared almost identical. I have many friends that are owners of different types of coney restaurants. I can promise you that you will not be disappointed in flavor or texture if you prepare the sauce using my spice. Most Coney style hotdogs have a base of rough ground. However, your coney island coneys use ground beef. With my spice, water (as in a coney island restaurant) and onion, the taste will definitely be there. A lot of time has been put into developing the spice and it truly is a spice that you will be happy to use. The toppings that your coneys have would be the only difference and you can add any topping that you prefer to a coney dog. Here in Flint the prefernce is onion and mustard. Folks turn their nose up with anything else. I don't and will eat them all! lol I was after the flavor and I definitely achieved it. I hope that this helps a bit. I do hope that you win the bottle. I love to convert folks! :)

Pick me, Pick me, come on Michelle, you know you want to .... o;-p I mean, we are fellow Michiganders and all .... ;-b

We did a 'hot dog bar' for one of our sons graduation open houses. I had come across a feature in a magazine that listed a lot of different type of speciality dogs and what were contained there in. So we sat up a 'hot dog bar' and had all of the various toppings available - from chili sauce, to sauerkraut, to baked beans and crushed potato chips and sand (which is an "Ao-Wa-Kiya dog" - the youth camp we are involved with - where the campers canoe either to or from the big lake (and ride the bus the other way) every Wed. and we serve dinner on the beach, [thus the sand ;-p])to any and every other topping the article included.

That particular open house was five years ago now and yet every year at oepn houses time people bring it up and want us to do it again.

"Love it when a plan comes together!!"

Anyways....I'd love to give this a try. I've never had a Coney Island anything and I'm kinda feeling left out LOL. This spice would probably be as close as I'd ever get to the real thing :)

Hey Michelle,
this is a note to Anonymous.

Dear Anonymous,
the myth about the hotdog being chopped into the coney sauce is simply a myth and a fill-in meat. Sorry. :( Some folks used ground hotdogs when they did not have pork available or to stretch the sauce. The pork was in a mixture called rough ground. If no rough ground was available, the cook would then take ground beef, ground pork and ground hot dogs and make that into the meat mixture.

That's it...a myth or rather a substitute meat. It was never mainstream and the secret was simple; the cooks did not want to tell what meat they used! Hilarious huh? lol

I promise you; My coney spice is absolutely authentic Flint Style coney spices. It will produce authentic coney sauce...sans chopped hotdogs!

Thanks Michelle again. You're awesome and I hope that this helps Anonymous out a bit!
