Big Black Dog: Welcome to the 3rd HBinFive Bread Braid

Welcome to the 3rd HBinFive Bread Braid

Whew...glad the holidays are over and I can sort of relax a little bit. I do love celebrating and seeing friends but it can be so trying at times. The old saying There's just not enough hours in a day must have been coined sometime around December 1st because that is when I feel the holiday pressure to get things done and the countdown begins.

I did have a wonderful Christmas and received some very cool kitchen gifts which are my favorite kind of gifts to receive. Yes, I am spoiled...very spoiled. But I did receive one special bread pan that I've wanted for some time now, 9" Pain de Mie bread pan with lid and you can find it at Amazon.com too. The first pan I received was bent and I could not slide the lid and I had to send it back so last week was the first chance I've had to bake in my new pan. So far I love it!

But it is a bit different baking with the Pain de Mie. First of all you can't see the bread while it baking so I had no idea if the bread was done or not unless I removed the pan from the oven and slide open the lid. And I was not sure just how much dough to put into the pan to get a nice sized loaf. But these small problems will work themselves out and being the bread baked so nicely with the most amazing crust, I will most definitely be using the Pain de Mie again!

This week for HBinFive we had assigned to make the Master Whole Grain Bread recipe and make a loaf of bread, a shaped bread and Spicy Whole Grain Snack Crackers.

I almost did not finish the Epi because I had an accident with a knife and my thumb was out of commission but I managed to finish it with my left hand. I know the Epi is not perfect but it's done!

With the wonderful loaf of bread I did serve Grilled Cheese Sandwiches for dinner, making one of my all-time favorites, Grilled Cheese with Brie and a Fresh Slice of Apple. Brie and Fresh Apple is also very good on a hamburger...yummy!

The Spicy Whole Grain Snack Crackers I served with a big pot of Chili and then made some Sweet and Spicy Peanut Soup. Just click on the title to visit the post and recipe.

Michelle,
Your crumb is beauiful. Much lighter than mine- just beautiful. Have you added any oil or honey? I love your new pan, it would be so handy for the perfect loaf. How is your thumb?

Michelle, a bit slow here...I was looking all over for the whole wheat cracker recipe the other day. Was thrilled when I stopped by today and saw them again...got it. Off to Amazon, hope the book is there along with that bread pan.

There is absolutely no good bread at a price a real person can afford in our little resort village. So, this will be good.

Michelle, several different things I wanted to comment about came to mind while reading this posting, and then as I was scrolling down to click to comment, I scan read some of the names of the people that linked up. What fun!!! So many people's blog names make me laugh! Such as? "Go ahead and snicker" or "lollipop kids". Such creativity! :-D

While reading about how the pan seals, so you weren't sure how much to put in it, etc., it brought to mind something I've tried, and for the most part not had much success with - the long, capped, shaped, loaf pans like to make fancy tea sandwich breads with. Have you ever used them? Any tips? Right now they are all bagged up and put away. I did have a couple of loafs turn out. But I also had a couple of them which overspilled all over the oven, and a couple that didn't even equal half of a loaf when finished ... bother!

Your grilled cheese sandwiches look tasty! Earlier today I had a hankerin for a grilled ham and colby jack cheese sandwich, with just a thin layer of Miracle Whip and a slice of fresh tomato added before the sandwich was grilled ... now I might need to get the ingredients for both varietys of sanwiches o;-p

then again, chili has been sounding good to .... and I have wanted to play with my "family recipe" a bit ....

girl. maybe I should stop reading your postings ... ;-p!!!!

That bread tin looks most interesting! And the brie and apple sounds nice, too. I love brie and cranberry, so apple would be good as well.

I checked out your dog biscuit recipe - very similar to the liver cake we make, and yes, the do love it, don't they?

Cheryl,

I replied to Cheryl via email but I thought someone else might be interested.

Sorry but I've no experience baking bread in bread tubes. Do you have the Pampered Chef tubes? I've wanted to try so am looking on Ebay and theres quite a few listed. Also there's some glass baking tubes from Corning too. If I win any auctions I will try out the dough and let you know how it goes. Are there directions with your tubes?

I just realized I've been so busy checking out everyone's entries that I forgot to leave our "ring leader" a comment (doh!)! How fun that you got to play with a new "toy". It would bug me not being able to see it though...and your grilled cheese...I've never seen it made with apple ....that sounds fantastic!! BTW, how did you get the cute little edges on your crackers? so cute!!
