Big Black Dog: Cream Cheese Cookies -- My Favorite Cookie!

Cream Cheese Cookies -- My Favorite Cookie!

When I was growing up every Christmas my Mom made Cream Cheese Cookies. She used her old-fashioned Cookie Press and made hundreds of little Christmas Trees, Camels and Wreaths. I remember the cookie sheets covered with green and red cookies laying on every flat surface of our kitchen and dining room. And I remember my Mom shaking colored sugars and confections and placing red hots for Christmas balls and silver dagrees for eyes. And I remember the wonderful smell of cookies baking!

And when I moved into my first apartment I, too, made Cream Cheese Christmas Cookies and covered them with confections and colored M&Ms. But I used a new manual Cookie Press which was smaller but still not comfortable to use but I persisted after all these are my favorite cookies! Until finally in 1986 I heard about an Electric Cookie Press and believe me I was at the store within hours and bought my first Super Shooter by Wear-Ever and it worked wonderfully.

I could not believe how fast the Super Shooter made the cookies. I could make two sheets of cookies in less then two minutes and every cookie was perfect and no more blisters on my hands from using the manual press! I now have three Wear-Ever Super Shooters just in case one burns out!

Cream Cheese Cookies
Recipe adapted from my Great Aunt Mil

1 c. Butter
1 c. Sugar
1-3oz pkg. of Cream Cheese **See Note
1 Egg Yolk
2 1/2 c. Flour
1/2 tsp. Vanilla

Cream butter; Add Cream Cheese and Sugar. Beat egg yolk; Add Vanilla and Flour;

Chill dough over night; Must use either a Cookie Press or dropped tsp and pressed with fork.

Bake at 350 Degrees for about 8 minutes or until lightly brown on bottom. Cookies should be soft not crispy.

**Note: I always double the recipe and just add 1-8oz package of Cream Cheese. I think the extra Cream Cheese makes a better cookie dough. And I sift all my dry ingredients. You must make the cookies within 24 hrs of making the dough, otherwise the cookies will loose flavor.

I love my Wear-Ever Super Shooter and although it's no longer made, you can still find them at local garage sales and on Ebay. I bought my extra Shooters at local garage sales and church rummage sales and neither had even been used and were completely intact including manual and in the original box. I think I paid around $5 for each of them but I would have paid much more. Just the thought of having to go back to a manual cookie press makes my hands hurt!

The Super Shooter is very easy to use. Just fill the barrel up with cookie dough, choose a cookie die and pull the trigger et viola...a cookie is born!

All Super Shooter parts are dishwasher safe except the actual gun which houses the motor and this can be easily wiped down with a damp cloth.

There are other brands of Electric Cookie Presses on the market now, some are even cordless. I did try the Salton and it was returned within a week. I'll stick with my Wear-Ever Super Shooter which is still going strong since 1986!

My grand-mother used to make those!!! They were so good!!

ps: it's "et voila" not "et viola." Viola is the past tense of the word "to rape"...

This is so fascinating to me. I have never made these cookies, but now that I have your recipe, I'll put this on my list for next year. Just hope I can find one of those magnificant "shooters". Wonder why they quit making them?
Merry Christmas,

I'll have to keep an eye out for a super-shooter...a quilting friend has promised me her grandmothers recipe for cheese cookies which are made using a cookie press.

Your cream cheese cookies remind me of the ones the Italian bakeries back home put in their cookie trays at Christmas. Very pretty! Do you divide up a batch and add food coloring or do an entire batch one color?

I *just* bought a cookie dough press (just a cheap $10 one from Target) and have been looking for a good recipe for spritz cookies. I definitely want to try yours!!

They look so pretty with all their shapes and colors. I've never made any cookie with a cookie press or shooter before. I guess I'm intimidated by it :D

I love these cookies, too!! Grandma makes them every single year...and I've always looked forward to them. I'm going to have to find one of those gadgets so that I can start baking them, too...I did try a manual press some years back and needless to say, that was the only year I made them...hated that press. Although grandma still uses it....ugh. I wish I had a couple right now :D

This bakery near my house definitely used to make these but I would have never guessed that they have cream cheese in them. I absolutely love them though and am so glad that now I can make them for myself! I totally do NOT have a cookie press. Guess I'll have to do them by hand...

I always make a double batch. Then divide the dough into thirds, coloring one third red, one third green and I leave the remaining third "natural".

HUGE applause to whom ever it was that invented cream cheese!!! Seriously!!! It can be used in so-o many ways/such a variety of 'products', often never letting the eater guess that it's cream cheese they are eating, cuz some 'don't like it' ya know .... o;-p

Your cookies look so moist, and tempting ... you really should have sent free samples to all of us ;->

While I have not stocked up on Cookie Presses, I have stocked up on certain large sized cake, pie, etc. carriers that Tupperware no longer carries. It started after I had lost mine on our house fire. Yes, the insurance co. gave me Tupperware credit, but Tupperware no longer made a few of the styles I preferred :-{ So my eyes are forever on the look out for them!!!

Michelle, at one point in time I know I mentioned to you how I had done a posting about wanting numerous pantry's, etc. in my "dream kitchen". I stumbled across the actual posting last evening while attempting to find a different subject matter. If your interested in reading it, go to: http://thehousethatlovebuilt.xanga.com/557325738/item/

I'll be looking for the "super shooter" in the spring when yard sales start up. I have a cookie press that works fairly well, but I couldn't give it great reviews the way you give yours. Love the idea of cream chesse in these cookies!

I have that same super shooter! I love it. We make these at Christmas as well only they are butter cookies. Yours are very prettily decorated. I copied your recipe to try the cream cheese version next year...I think I am cookie-d out for this one. Right now all I want are some really great appetizers with no sweets in them at all. Are you feeling that way, too?

Your cookies are beautiful!

You really have three Supershooters? I used to have one but got rid of it to gain more shelf space in the kitchen. I have to admit though, I've regretted it a time or two. If only I had your recipe to begin with ....

You know it doesn't look like it would be a good product but you say it is.
That is what is so great about your "gadgets that work" posts.

Oh how I dream of having one of those Super Shooters! I used to have a manual one but I misplaced a lot of the pieces so I donated it to the Goodwill. I will have to hunt down one like yours! :D Your cookies are darling!

Awesome!
Question, do you think these would be okay without a cookie press? Like just forming balls and/or would the dough roll out like sugar cookie dough? I'd love to make them, but do not have a press. I love how it makes so many!

Katrina,

You can make drop cookies with the Cream Cheese Cookie dough. Just take about a tsp or so of dough, roll it into a ball, place the dough ball on the cookie sheet and crisscross with a fork, like you make Peanut Butter Cookies.

Or you can roll out the dough and cut with a cookie cutter.

I did make these cookies that day I emailed you. What a wonderful dough to work with. I rolled most out like a cut out cookie dough and it never gave me any problems. May be my new go-to sugar cookie. I made yellow stars, green wreaths and rolled ropes in red for candy canes. Thanks!
